On this page, we show you how many animals are really dying. This is an attempt to make the staggering number of land animals killed more visible. We often see abstract figures – thousands or millions of animals dying for humans – but grasping the severity of these numbers can be difficult.
How the counter works
We refer to data from Germany. Annual summaries are easily available. According to WWF, “Currently, around 700 million animals are used for food purposes in Germany. About 750 million animals are slaughtered annually, more than two million animals per day.”
The Albert-Schweitzer-Foundation refers to figures from the Federal Statistical Office from 2023. They not only provide the exact number of total animal killings in Germany in 2023 (745,052,689 animals) but also provide data for individual animal species. We break these numbers down to the number of animals killed per second.

* How We Calculated
The figures from the Federal Statistical Office, processed by the Albert-Schweitzer-Foundation, result in the following calculations:
Per Year: approximately 745,052,689 animals
Per Day: approximately 2,041,240 animals
Per Hour: approximately 85,052 animals
Per Minute: approximately 1,418 animals
Per Second: approximately 23.63 animals
Important: Of course, the number of animals killed varies on different days, and fewer animals are typically slaughtered at night compared to during the day. We are showing the average number of animals killed per day, broken down to a per-second rate.
And what about all the fish that had to die?
Fishing is usually measured by weight, typically in tons. There are no precise catch figures that indicate the number of individual fish caught. This alone demonstrates how little value a life has in the fishing industry. Unfortunately, the lives lost are not reflected in these figures.
